About Richmond

Richmond is the fourth largest city in BC. It was incorporated as a city in 1990. Richmond is located to the south of Vancouver and west of New Westminster.

In 1861 Colonel Richard Moody while surveying select BC town-sites on the Fraser River, named the Sea and Lulu Islands. In 1862 Hugh McRoberts became the first settler and purchased over 1000 acres on Sea Island. He called his farm Richmond View after his previous home in Australia. The first bridge connecting Richmond with the mainland was in 1889. YVR (Vancouver International Airport) was built in 1931 on Sea Island.

Early on Richmond was known for its agriculture and fishing in Steveston. But over time the city became more residential.

Richmond has a culturally diverse population. From 1971-1991 Richmonds population more than doubled due to increased immigration from Hong Kong, China, Philippines and Taiwan.
Some popular Richmond landmarks are Minoru Park, Minoru Chapel, Britannia Shipyard, London Heritage Farm. The annual Richmond Night Market is a must attend event as well.
